Hi,
My name is Eric Shovein, and I am a new Americorps member in the area
serving in the program “The Power of We Consortium.” My mission
during the next 12 months is to promote better health in the Lansing
area by creating community gardens and by helping communities beautify vacant land.

My site of service is the Ingham County Land Bank, which is a large part of why I am able to do this project. They’re willing to give away land for free, or lease it for a couple dollars a year. The Land Bank is also willing to provide tools, and whatever else is needed for the garden to become a reality if participants aren't equipped with necessary tools.

The land bank isn’t just focused on community gardens, but as I said
beautification of land. So, if rather than a produce garden, or in
addition to one you would like flowers planted on a vacant lot, or a
pocket park, we can help.

The two things they are not able to provide are the man power, and a
mass of volunteers. That is where I come in. The goal is not to have
large volunteer groups orchestrate these gardens, but rather families,
communities, and groups who are willing to till the soil and tend
their garden in order to have a successful harvest and wonderful
family, or community experience.

I'm writing this to you because as a Lansing expert I'd like to know if you are interested, if you know groups that may be, and if you can adverstise the project on here. I'm currently in the planning stages and ideally would like groups picked out by the end of February at the latest.

I've already contacted the Lansing Neighborhood Council, most of the community centers and community associations, from there i'm not sure where to go.

Thank you for your help,
Sincerely,
Eric Shovein
