City of Lansing’s financial situation worsens with credit rating downgrade

by Wes Thorp on October 16, 2011

If you follow the financial struggles of the city of Lansing, then you need to see this WLNS story about Moody’s downgraded the city’s credit rating. There are lots of questions:

  • What does this mean for the present city budget?  The next one for 2012?
  • Will any of the present bonds sold by the city be affected or will it be only future ones?
  • How long has it been since the city has had the top credit rating?
  • What are the prospects that the credit rating will fall even farther?
  • What role did falling property tax revenues play in the downgrade?
  • When are property tax collections expected to rise again?

The city’s financial trajectory continues downward.  How many more city hall employees can be laid off, including police and fire?
