City budget time is almost here with Mayor Virg Bernero presenting his proposed budget to the Lansing City Council for their approval.
His proposal will reflect new realities in the local economy where a high number of mortgage and tax foreclosures have lowered property values and consequently revenues to pay for city services. Also, a second big source of income for the city is state revenue sharing pays for a significant portion of the city’s bill for police and fire services.
State revenue to local units of government will continue to plummet as state revenues continue to fall.
What does that mean for those of us who live and work in the city of Lansing?
What are the essential services which can’t be cut? Which shouldn’t be cut? How have earlier cuts affected city services?
Anybody know? Have an opinion?
Check out the FY2010AdoptedBudgetBook (PDF) for the current fiscal year as approved by the City Council? It does not include the deficit elimination plans.
