Are the pancakes at Sawyer’s in Lansing as good as they look?

by Wes Thorp on March 8, 2010

I’ve driven by Sawyer’s Gourmet Pancake House on the corner of Pine and Saginaw in Lansing, but I have never eaten there.  After watching their YouTube video about their restaurant, I have to admit I can’t wait.  How did I miss this place?  Check their video and their online menu. Any reaction?

Yum! Sawyer’s is on my list of places to visit soon. Sounds like a menu my husband and kids would approve of. I’ve heard good things and have yet to make it over there since moving back to the area. I’m on the board for Capital Area Local First (CALF) and love Sawyer’s commitment to work with local businesses!

I love their food (the pancakes and omelets are heaven), but they are DEFINITELY not the fastest place to eat. If you’re going here for lunch, plan for at least an hour to get your food. If it’s busy, you’ll be much longer.

Thanks for the comments, Lisa and Benny. I’m reading them as I eat my oatmeal this morning and dream of their pancakes with blueberries on top. I will definitely try them. Are there any other restaurants in the Lansing area deserving of a toot who may have not been looked at by others?

Their ‘cakes are good but I was not happy with the portion size in relation to the price. I understand local and organic will be pricier, but you can get those at other local eateries and leave with a full stomach. Also, presentation was lacking, just food on a plate with no attention to making it look appealing.

Service was terrible too… We were one of only two tables in the restaurant and the server never came back to top up coffee. My husband tried waving his empty coffee cup in the air for over 10 minutes before he finally gave up and finished the meal without a refill.

If you haven’t, you must try the Golden Harvest. Fantastic breakfast food, (much locally sourced), prepared & presented by a seasoned chef and you’ll never leave hungry! Sure, you’ll wait in line for table, but you’ll do that at Sawyer’s too…

Kate-thanks for your comments. They are helpful. Where’s Golden Harvest?

The Golden Harvest is located on the North side in Old Town, at the corner of Turner & Dwight. The diner has a looooong history, back to the 1950′s, has had several different owners but has churned out the same amazing food all that time!

It’s small, and you’ll wait in line… but it’s worth it!

(Oh, and cash only… so leave your plastic at home!)
