Beware: Lansing State Journal reports spike in copper thefts from vacant houses

by Wes Thorp on February 15, 2010

Many neighborhoods in the city of Lansing have vacant houses because of foreclosures and these are targets of local copper thieves, according to this morning’s Lansing State Journal.

The story reports:
Citywide, there were 67 copper thefts in the past six months, according to data provided by city police. That compares with 14 thefts the first six months of 2009.

The increase in the thefts conincide with a doubling of prices paid for copper at local recycling facilities.
