Putting teeth in Lansing's (MI) snow shoveling ordinance

by Wes Thorp on February 10, 2010

We just had a big snow storm here in the city of Lansing (MI) and there are plenty of homeowners out shoveling or blowing snow.  But, there will be many residents who don’t, as well as plenty of businesses.

For the past couple of years, the Lansing City Council has tried to pass amendments to our snow shoveling ordinance which would put more teeth in requirements that walks be cleared.  If a property owner failed to act under the proposals, then the city would do it and then put a lien on the person’s property.

A final vote was never taken on the ordinance, but I bet with the big snow it will come up again soon.  When it does, there are lots of questions about changes and about their enforcement.

What do you think about the changes? Are you familiar with past efforts? Have you seen a copy of past proposals? Where did you find it?

The city needs to leave people alone. As someone who has a corner lot, it is a pain to keep it shoveled all the time. The last thing I want it a cash strapped city pouncing on me so they can make extra money.

Jeff-thanks for the comment. The ordinance will not change shoveling behaviors, I’m sure. I am anxious to see when the proposed ordinance changes will be reintroduced. I’ll try to follow it-Wes
