As city of Lansing residents, we seldom hear anything positive said about schools in the Lansing School District. Our neighbors with young kids, generally, try to get their kids enrolled elsewhere under schools of choice or they move to a suburb with a different school system.
Could our city schools be getting a bad rap? On Saturday, we attended the school district’s Magnet School Fair at the Don Johnson Fieldhouse at Eastern High School where parents and kids were invited to get a taste for each school, talk to teachers and to see exhibits about what happens at each one.

For those not familiar with what magnet schools are, they have a themed curriculum where the basics of reading and writing and math are built into a special interest area for the students from kindergarten through high school. From the brochures we picked up and the schools with exhibits, here are the themes:
- Spanish Immersion at Averill Elementary.
- Math, science and engineering at Dwight Rich for sixth through eighth graders.
- Visual and performing arts at Everett High School.
- Visual and performing arts at Pleasant View Elementary School.
- The International Baccalaureate Program at Post Oak for preK to fifth grade.
- Math, science and engineering at Sexton High School.
- Leadership, law and government at Wainwright School for preK to Middle Schoolers.
- Montessori at Wexford for preK-Middle Schoolers.
- Math, science and engineering at Woodcreek Elementary School for kindergarten through fifth grade.
