Most of the inmates from the often overcrowded Ingham County (MI) jail come from the city of Lansing. Many are sent there by local judges who mete out short jail incarceration to make a point.
Now their ability to do that will probably be affected by the Ingham County Board of Commissioners who are looking to close down one section of the jail with 64 beds as a means to save money in the current budget where there’s an anticipated shortfall of more than $2 million.
This Lansing State Journal story reports on how the County Comission will vote on the issue next Tuesday night and how there are conflicting points of view in the body. The story outlines how the jail faces chronic overcrowding where state law mandates that certain numbers of prisoners be given early release.
