East Lansing Amtrak stop sets passenger record

by Wes Thorp on January 30, 2010

As the local economy went thorugh historic struggles this past year, the East Lansing Amtrak line set a historic record high for passengers in a year, according to a story today in the Lansing State Journal.

The story says that: “More than 50,950 riders boarded or got off the national passenger railroad’s trains in East Lansing in fiscal year 2009 that ended Sept 30.”

This Amtrak line starts in Port Huron, goes through East Lansing and ends in Chicago with stops along the way.

The state subsidy that the line receives has been under constant threats from the Michigan Legislature to either be reduced or cut.  But, these statistics show that the user-base has increased substantially.

Do you or have you used Amtrak out of East Lansing?  What’s your opinion about the service?  The ride?  The ticket cost?  Does it deserve to be continued?
