West Holmes Road portion to be reconstructed and reduced to three lanes

West Holmes Road, from Pleasant Grove to Waverly, will be totally reconstructed this summer and pinched down to three lanes from four, according to Lansing’s top transportation officials who shared the plans at last night’s Averill Woods Neighborhood Association meeting.
While developing plans to update this major east-west roadway, the officials explained that the roadway had deteriorated beyond the point of just being resurfaced and was in need of a complete reconstruction.

Because federal transportation funds are being used for the project, they said that federal standards require the narrow roadway to be reduced from four lanes to three with single east-west lanes and a center turn lane.  There would also be wider shoulders on both sides.

Property owners and residents on this portion of West Holmes Road have been notified of the work scheduled for the new construction season.

At the meeting, the officials also shared possible solutions to neighbor concerns about through traffic on Starlight from Waverly to Averill.  With last year’s changes to the Waverly-West Holmes intersection traffic conditions have resulted in more traffic turning off on Starlight disrupting this tiny street with no sidewalks or curb and gutters.  Solutions were also discussed to traffic on Averill by Averill Elementary School, including temporary stop signs and the possibility of construction a raised crosswalk.

Does anyone know if South Washington Avenue between Mount Hope and Holmes will be reconstructed anytime soon? That road is really getting rough — and you can patch it so many times.
