UPDATE: 1) Detroit News story about Lt. Gov. Cherry dropping out of the race. 2) Here is John Cherry’s statement about why he’s dropping out of the race.
Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero’s odds seem to have grown overnight to run for Michigan governor seem to have grown overnight with Lt. Gov. John Cherry pulling out of the race.
State Capitol reporter Tim Skubick is reporting this morning that Cherry will announce his withdrawal from the race for the Democratic nomination to succeed
incumbent Gov. Jennifer Granholm. That leaves the race wide open and it seems to empower Bernero’s efforts.
Bernero has the skills to get media attention and the propensity of the media to pay attention to him would increase with Cherry deciding not to run.
What does this mean for city government in Lansing? Can he successfully divide his attention between two jobs as a full-time mayor for our challenged city and as a candidate for governor?
Stay tuned.
