QUESTION: Did you know about Lansing's (MI)) free parking downtown?

by Wes Thorp on December 29, 2009

Thank-you to the Lansing State Journal for letting area residents know today about free parking everywhere in downtown Lansing, including street and ramp spaces.  This lasts until Jan. 4.

It’s because most city of Lansing employees are on furlough until Jan. 4 because of a severe deficit in our town’s budget.  The goal is to send the employees home so the money saved by not paying them could help pay the city’s bills.

As a result, there’s nobody left this week to enforce the city’s parking meters and to man the parking fee booths in the ramps.

Now the merchants and others are touting this as an opportunity to draw customers to downtown stores and restaurants.  But, this is the first time I’ve heard about the non-enforcement.

Has anybody seen any official announcement of this?  And has anybody seen an estimate of how much parking revenue will be lost during the furlough period
