Mayor Virg Bernero is giving serious thought to running for the Democratic nomination for Michigan governor. But, a recent poll, according to the Lansing State Journal shows that 81 % of likely voters next year have never heard of him.
What does this mean for the city of Lansing if he decides to officially jump into the campaign? He has formed an exploratory committee to determine whether he has the potential support to make a serious run and whether he can raise the necessary money.
If he decides to run for governor, he will need to travel the state to raise his name recognition and to build a statewide base of support.
How will that affect city government and the city of Lansing which is struggling to keep its head above the financial waters? City revenue has been dwindling and will continue to go down because of the area’s and the state’s down economy.
It’s a situation that demands a hands-on, full-time leader.
If he runs, he will be drawn away and his attention to the city’s needs will be divided.
What do you think?
