Ingham County Commissioners use tax money for charitable contributions

by Wes Thorp on December 26, 2009

Ingham County commissioners are using tax money to financially support selected local charities.  Did you know that?

Keep in mind that the county government has been threatening to drastically cut services, including the road patrol for the Ingham County Sheriff.  There has been much hand-wringing about supporting programs and about the possible necessity to raise county taxes.

The charitable contributions were written about by Lansing State Journal editorial page editor Derek Melot.  In his blog on the newspaper’s website, he reports about a controversy surrounding the county’s contribution to the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing.  The contribution was doubled while those to other groups remained the same.

Melot’s blog post doesn’t include the complete list of contributions or the total amount.

The post and the questions raised from it demonstrate county government’s low profile to the public and the lack of regular and detailed reporting about what it does and how it uses taxpayer money.

With the State Journal not having regular stories about the county commission and county government, are there blogs or other venues to stay informed?
