To stay informed in the city of Lansing and in mid-Michigan, you need to be hooked into the area’s extensive Twitter network.
Are you familiar with Twitter, an incredibly popular and free mini-blogging service where you send messages that are 140 characters or less. You create your own group which can send messages back and forth. It’s also easy to search for individuals and businesses and join their groups.
Many stay away from Twitter out of fear that they will be inundated with text message type drivel about what a person has to eat or what they’re reading while sitting on the commode. The reality is that there’s lots of useful information, including links and photos that are sent back and forth. It’s a quick way to inform others on a wide array of subjects.
To give you a taste, I will start a list of local Twitter-users to show the vastness of this emerging local network. I will keep adding interesting users as I come across their tweets. These include:
- @potterparkzoo This is a great way to stay in touch with happenings at our local zoo which is just off Pennsylvania Avenue. Read their tweets and you’ll get info about promotions, exhibits and about things that just happened. Great if you have kids or you just like animals.
- @wilxtv This Twitter feed from Lansing’s WILX and their news department provides you with a whole lot of local and other news as it happens. One more way to stay informed.
- @downtownlansing Just ask our Mayor Bernero about all the stuff happening in downtown Lansing. This Twitter feed provides info about specifics from downtown businesses. There’s a lot you might miss if you’re not a regular customer at these establishments.
- @lansinguc Lansing Urgent Care on Clippert Street by Frandor has their own Twitter feed. Take a look and see if they have any tweets or links that might be helpful.
- @aarpmichigan Maybe you’re a hip baby-boomer about ready to crossover into being a senior citizen. Check the links on this Twitter feed from AARP of Michigan.
There are plenty more and I will continue sharing them. How about you local Twitter-users? Do you have any local Twitter links that you would like to share?
