How close is Lansing getting to a property tax increase?

by Wes Thorp on June 16, 2009

Lansing City Hall may dip into its reserve fund for almost $1 million to satisfy a possible budget gap when the books close in two weeks.

Gerry Ambrose, the city’s finance director, last night asked for the Lansing City Council’s authority to make the withdrawal from its $10 million reserve fund because of an unexpected loss of more than $500,000 in state revenue sharing funds and a reduction in interest earnings on city accounts.

Here are some details from the Lansing State Journal.

The city has taken extreme measures in the past couple of years to balance the budget.  Lots of positions have been unfilled.

To maintain needed services, will or should the City Council start talking about a property tax increase?
