Lansing (MI) School District looks at downsizing, restructuring

by Wes Thorp on February 26, 2009

At times, it seems like a steady one-way stream of families moving from the city of Lansing to the outlying area.  For many the biggest reason for leaving is their perception of  public schools in the city.

The annual losses from city schools have been substantial with state aid being reduced for each student loss.

Now the Lansing School District has a task force  to right-size and some major changes are possible.  These include:  closing of Moores Park Elementary School at the end of this school year, closing one at the end of next school year, replacing the remaining elementary schools with four new ones regionally located, revision of school attendance boundaries, elimination of the Hill Career Academy and other items.

The Lansing Board of Education is expected to get the report by the end of next week.
